How Can Your Senior Help to Forestall Memory Problems?

By Denise Roskamp

Memory issues are a terrible situation for your aging adult. She may worry that they're far more serious than they are, especially if she knows someone who has dementia. Following even a few of these tips can help your aging adult to boost her memory.

Eat Hearty, Nutritious Meals

It just stands to reason that the better the fuel is that your senior's brain and body are running on, the better they'll both operate. You're aiming for a diet of whole foods, consisting mostly of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Meal preparation and the very thought of cooking can be a huge turn-off for your senior, so consider cooking for her or hiring elder care providers to take over the heavy lifting.

Get More Physically Active

Just as eating the right foods helps to boost your senior's mental energy, so too does physical exercise. Check with her doctor before beginning any new exercise programs and then look for physical activities that she enjoys. If your elderly family member likes the new movements you're adding to her day she's far more likely to stick with them.

Keep Her Brain Active, Too

But of course the biggest muscle that needs to keep working out is your senior's brain. Keeping her mentally active involves so many small things that are easy for you and for her to do. If she enjoys puzzles, word games, and other types of games, those are a great way to keep her brain going. Don't forget that learning new hobbies and skills or simply taking a different route to the grocery store also keeps her brain firing.

Stay or Get Social

The more active your senior is socially, the better off she'll be. The reason for this is that social activity helps to keep your elderly family member from feeling or being isolated, which can lead to depression and other problems. Getting together with friends and family is really all that your senior needs to do in order to stay socially active, but if she enjoys meeting new people, there are plenty of opportunities available.

Take stock periodically of where your senior is with each of these different factors and look for ways to make improvements. Even small improvements can help a great deal.
