Build a Great Caregiver Resume

By Ketan Patel

In-home caregivers are in more demand now than ever to help an ever increasing population of aging seniors. If you want to work for a caregiving agency that will give you the support, flexibility and stability you are looking for, take the time to put together a great resume. When you are finished, read it over a couple of times and try to see your  resume through the eyes of the employer.

Resume Basics

Your resume should clearly state your professional experience, your skills and your educational background. The resume should be written in an easy to read font like Arial or Times New Roman in a 10 -12 point font size. Make sure to use wide margins, around 1 inch all around. Keep it organized and consistent and list the most important headings first. Use bullet points for brevity and clarity. When you list your job experience, list the last job first. Remember, one page is enough. Make sure your spelling and punctuation is perfect.

What to Include

You will want to include your experience, skills and background as well as any honors and awards you have been given. Include activities if they relate to your field, like volunteering at a hospital or the Special Olympics. Do not mention personal information. Omit any reference to your age, your marital status, your religion or you political affiliation. You can say that references are available upon request, and keep your list of references handy when the agency asks for them.

Heading, Professional Summary and Objective

When you begin your resume be sure to put your name at the top in large, bold typeface and include your contact information. Write a brief 2-3 sentence Professional Summary at the top and include your job objective by stating the position you are seeking.

Qualifications, Experience and Education

Resumes vary according to the applicant’s background, but you may want to have a section labeled Core Qualifications with bullet points relating to your skills, knowledge and abilities. Next comes your Professional Experience with your current or most recent experience listed first. Use action words such as:

  • Performed
  • Cared for
  • Assisted with
  • Monitored
  • Improved
  • Trained
  • Implemented
  • Scheduled

The next section is your Education. Include any and all classwork, field work, online courses and certifications.
