Top 10 Tests that are Crucial to Monitor Men’s Health

I am very happily married to an amazing man, and we are blessed to have three beautiful children together: two boys and a girl. As an advanced practice nurse, wife, mother, and owner of Home Helpers® Wheaton & Naperville, I am steadfast in my commitment to my family’s and my clients’ health and well-being.

In the roles of wife and mother, I provide my husband and children with nutritious meals, and I encourage regular exercise, self-care, and routine visits to our primary care provider for annual check-ups to professionally monitor their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

As a Registered Nurse Practitioner, I know how important it is to keep my husband, my boys, and my male clients on the right track by giving them the resources they need to make informed decisions about their health.

According to the Illinois chapter of the Men’s Health Network, women live five years longer than men, on average. What’s more, “In Illinois, among women married to men the same age as themselves, over 16% will be widows as they enter retirement (ages 65-69).”

I don’t know about you, but I find this statistic to be quite troubling! Being a devoted wife and proud boy-mom, I want to make sure the men in my life – both, personally and professionally – stay foresighted about their physical, mental, and emotional health.

Activebeat, a health and wellness website explains, “Many men are reluctant to visit their health care professionals on a regular basis. Why? It varies, though many men seem to believe that a visit to the doctor will only bring bad news. It’s the wrong approach, though, because having a physician check for specific medical issues, based on the patient’s age, can be a critical and proactive step in overcoming any serious health problems that may arise.”

For Men’s Health Month, Activebeat published a list of 10 crucial tests that men should have to keep close tabs on their physical health:

  1. Blood Pressure Test
  2. Cholesterol Test
  3. Diabetes Screening
  4. Dental Check-up
  5. Eye Exam
  6. STD Exam
  7. Prostate Exam
  8. Colon Cancer Screening
  9. Osteoporosis Test
  10. Lung Cancer Screening

These vital tests will provide detailed insight into specific areas of a man’s physical health, so he can make informed decisions about his lifestyle and treatment options when conditions are detected. For almost any condition, early detection is key to successful treatment outcomes.

That’s what I tell my family, and at Home Helpers®, we are like family when family can’t be there! I gladly offer FREE Assessments for senior men (and women), and carefully match compassionate caregivers who will make life easier by providing transportation assistance to/from doctor appointments and diagnostic tests, as well as in-home care services that are tailored to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle and remain independent at home for as long as possible.
