You've carved out a whole day to spend with your parents. And while you could spend that time with the usual lunch and outing to the grocery store, you also could make the day extra memorable and fun.

The Chicago suburbs are full of exciting things to do and places to visit. It just takes a little looking, and every month Home Helpers does the searching for you. Our monthly calendar of events is filled with free and affordable options for seniors to enjoy alone or with their families. Here are just a few ideas from our September calendar. DarienFest, set for Sept. 8-10,  has been a local tradition for 30 years. The weekend kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday and continues through Sunday with food, music and plenty of live entertainment. All of the festivities are held at Darien Community Park, 71st and Clarendon Hills Road. Admission is free. Click here for more details.

The 22nd La Grange West End Arts Festival takes place on Burlington Avenue in downtown La Grange from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9 and 10. The show features the works of more than 50 juried artists as well as local students. Admission is FREE.

Grandparents Weekend takes place at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St., Naperville, at 10 a.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Enjoy inter-generational family activities including an antique tractor display and a visit from a “John Deere” costumed presenter on Saturday. For National Grandparents Day on Sunday, learn about “Collecting Family Folklore,” and Illinois agriculture from the Future Farmers of America and the DuPage County Farm Bureau. $12, $10 seniors, $8 children 4-12 admitted free.

41st Annual Downtown Downers Grove Fine Arts Festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day on Main Street between Grove and Curtiss. The show features artists from across the country.  FREE admission.

Experience a Revolutionary War Reenactment at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Cantigny Park, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. Witness mock battles and experience life in the 18th century by strolling through a large encampment of soldiers and civilians. FREE

Graue Mill and Museum on York Road in Oak Brook presents Cornfest Family Fun Day from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10. Enjoy food, fishing, music and more. $4.50, $4 seniors, $2 children 4-12.
