Can You Really Do it All?

One of the questions you run into as a caregiver is whether you can do it all on your own. You’ve got a variety of different roles to fill and you might be wondering whether any of this is possible. The good news is that there are resources out there and if you take the time to do some planning, you might get closer than you thought possible to handling everything.

Get Really Clear about Your Priorities and Your Goals

When you have a firm grip on both your priorities and your goals, you’re more likely to meet both. Your goals are what you want to get done or what you want to accomplish. Your priorities tell you the best order in which to handle the tasks that make up your goals. When your priorities and your goals are at odds, that’s when you run into problems. Your senior’s needs are a priority, but you might have other goals, too, like maintaining your career, that have a similar priority level. You’re going to need to look for ways to balance those priorities, while still meeting your goals.

Ask for Help Now Rather than Waiting

One of the best ways to balance conflicting goals and priorities is to delegate tasks that you aren’t able to do yourself. It’s difficult for caregivers to ask for the help that they need, though. You might find that you’re still doing a lot on your own, even when other family members might have been able to help. Let them know what you need and figure out if they’re able to offer you some of the help you need. If not, then it might be time to consider hiring home care providers. You can hand off tasks to them related to your senior’s care and know that she’s in the best of hands.

Put Some Plans Together for Emergencies

You’re also going to need to make sure that you have multiple plans in place for emergencies. You might feel as if you’re handling everything, until you get to a point where everything starts to fall apart. If you’ve got a plan for those situations, you’re in a much better position. Look for situations in all areas of your life that could become problematic and determine what you could reasonably put a plan in place to resolve.

You can do more than you might think, but you don’t have to do it all by yourself. That’s where a lot of caregivers find themselves getting frustrated. Put plans in place to help yourself to manage and make sure you get help.
