How to Calm Your Mind When You’re Constantly Busy

By Dawn Hill

Something that a lot of caregivers run into is that their brains are constantly going. It leaves you feeling wired, and then when you’re trying to do something like sleep, your brain just won’t shut down. Some of these techniques can help you manage that problem.

Deep Breathing Exercises

Deep breathing exercises allow you to focus on your body without overthinking things. If you’re new to deep breathing, start out slowly and work your way up to deep belly breaths. Focus on what it feels like when your lungs are filling up and then full. Concentrate on breathing as deeply as you can and relax while you do so.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

This type of relaxation technique involves lying down in a relaxed position. You’ll start out by focusing on one set of muscles, like in your feet, and tensing them as much as you can for a few seconds. Then you relax that same group of muscles. The tensing helps you to feel the full relaxation and notice the difference when your muscles are relaxed. Work your way up your entire body.

Guided Meditations

Many people find meditation to be too complicated to fully appreciate, but guided meditations are a little less complicated. You can find guided meditations on YouTube or in meditation apps. Find one that sounds like something that you’d like to try and give it a listen. Try a variety of different meditations to find your favorites and bookmark them so they’re easy to find later.

Walk More Often

Walking, particularly in a pattern, can help you to allow your brain to drift a bit and calm itself. If there’s a track near you, consider going there to walk. You don’t have to think about where you’re walking and you can just let your mind drift.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness sounds a lot more complicated than it has to be. What you’re really doing is making sure that you’re fully in the moment with everything that you do. No matter what you’re doing, pay close attention to that task. Don’t worry about what else you have to do or anything from the past. Notice everything about what you’re doing in that moment.

Give some of these ideas a try to see if they work for you. If you don’t have success with one technique, just try another. As a busy caregiver, your goal is simply to find something that works well for you without causing you even more stress and creating complications that you don’t need.
