Preparing Your Parent for Thanksgiving

By Ketan Shah

With Thanksgiving just around the corner you are likely thinking about how you can make this holiday as meaningful and memorable as possible for your senior. If your aging parent has been suffering from cognitive functioning decline, memory loss, or other such challenges, however, you may find that this preparation is more difficult than it has been in previous years. Taking the time to prepare your parent, and yourself, for this celebration can ease stress and anxiety, and help both of you to enjoy the holiday more.

Use these tips to help you prepare your parent for Thanksgiving:

  • Talk to them about the holiday and evaluate what they remember or think about it so that you can build your discussion from there
  • Remind them of what Thanksgiving is, why it's celebrated, and some of the traditions from your family so that they can begin to feel more familiar with it again
  • Talk to them about the people they will see, whether the celebration is being held at your home, their home, or somewhere else. If they are in a further stage of the disease, show them pictures of these people and remind them of their relationship to them
  • If you are traveling, talk to your parent about where you are going, how you are getting there, and your itinerary. If you are traveling by a method other than car, talk to them about what to expect from this method of travel, such as how they will get through security or how to navigate the cars of a train
  • Talk to them about dietary limitations and how you will address those during the Thanksgiving meal. Have them help you choose foods that fit with their limitations and that you can prepare easily to either serve with the meal or to bring along to the house hosting the meal
  • Consider having a home care provider with your parent on the holiday. This can ease their anxiety and ensure that they get the care that they need while also allowing you to enjoy the holiday for yourself

Starting home care for your aging parent is one of the best decisions that you can make during the course of your caregiver journey with them. An in-home senior care services provider can be in your parent's home on a fully customized schedule to ensure that they always have access to the care, support, and assistance that they need to handle their individual challenges, limitations, and needs. This not only helps them to stay safe, healthy, and comfortable throughout their later years, but also encourages them to pursue a lifestyle that is more active, engaged, independent, and fulfilling. For you as their family caregiver, knowing that your aging parent has continued access to personalized care can give you peace of mind, ease your stress, and enable you to focus time and energy on other elements of your life as well.
