Six Ways In-home Care Can Support Those With Parkinson’s Disease

Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease can be a very uncertain time for the patient, as well as their family members. Parkinson’s is a progressive condition, meaning a person’s needs will continuously evolve as it advances.

The exact rate of progression for Parkinson’s disease can be challenging to predict. Creating a long-term care plan early on will help patients and their family better understand the condition, the available treatment options, and what to expect as the disease progresses. Knowing which services and resources are available will make it easier when a transition is necessary.

As a leading professional in-home care provider, Home Helpers® Home Care understands that each Parkinson’s patient is unique. We can help develop a customized care plan tailored to the specific needs of the patient and their family to help them adjust to life with Parkinson’s disease.

Here are six ways we can provide support.

  1. MAINTAIN INDEPENDENCE – Our Exceptional Caregivers® can assist with basic activities of daily living, such as personal hygiene, dressing, and grooming. Personal in-home care by a professional Home Helpers Caregiver provides needed support that keeps those diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease where they are the most comfortable: at home.
  1. MEDICATION MANAGEMENT – Currently, there is no known cure for Parkinson’s disease, however there are treatments and medications available to help manage the symptoms. Our Caregivers can provide medication reminders, assist with prescription pick up, and prepare meals if medications need to be taken with food.
  1. STAYING ACTIVE – Those with Parkinson’s disease may have rigid, stiff muscles. Regular exercise and movement throughout the day, which our team can help facilitate, has been shown to help improve these symptoms. Whether it’s through a daily walk around the neighborhood or other routine daily activities such as washing dishes, shopping, or cleaning, we’re here to keep you moving and motivated. If needed, our team can also help transport the client to and from physical therapy.
  1. MEAL PLANNING AND NUTRITION – According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, research has shown that modifying your diet to include plenty of whole foods can help those with Parkinson’s better control their symptoms and may even slow the condition’s progression. Consuming fruits, vegetables, lean protein, beans, legumes, and whole grains, as well as staying hydrated, help to maintain energy levels and overall health. Our Caregivers can help plan, shop, cook, and serve a menu that meets and maintains the patient’s nutritional requirements.
  1. SECURITY AND SUPERVISION – A stooped posture and impaired balance are common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, which can make it a challenge to walk. Our Caregivers will go through the home and inform you what needs to change so there is a minimal risk of trips or falls. Additionally, our 24-hour monitoring services can provide peace of mind even when our Caregivers aren’t there to supervise.
  1. RELIEVING FAMILY MEMBERS – Caring for someone with Parkinson’s disease can often be challenging, stressful, and may lead to burnout. The only thing that’s certain about Parkinson’s is its uncertainty, which can take its toll emotionally and physically on the primary Caregiver over time. Our respite care services provide a much needed break for the primary Caregiver and offer a sense of comfort knowing their loved one is being taken care of while they are away.
